How We Size a Pool Heat Pump for Sri Lankan Climates

Continental Pool Engineering TeamOctober 9, 20256 min read

Heat pump sizing isn't just about pool volume — altitude and average night-time temperature matter just as much, which is why a hill-country pool in Nuwara Eliya needs a very different specification to a coastal pool in Mirissa.

Wind exposure accelerates heat loss significantly. An exposed rooftop or hillside pool often needs both a larger heat pump and a wind-sheltering strategy, rather than heating capacity alone.

Oversizing wastes money on equipment and running costs; undersizing means a pool that never quite reaches a comfortable temperature. We model expected heat loss for each specific site before recommending a unit.

A correctly sized heat pump, paired with a pool cover for overnight retention, is usually the difference between a pool used year-round and one used only in the warmest months.
